The cooling fan is responsible for maintaining proper engine coolant temperature and A/C cooling. When a BMW X3 cooling fan fails, the fan will not activate or only activate at high speed. You can check cooling fan operation by turning on your air-conditioning and listening for the fan to activate. The DME is housed in the E-box, located in the left rear of the engine compartment. The DME, relays and fuses are in this central location to keep wiring to a minimum. The box is cooled by an electric fan. The fan feeds air to the DME cooling shroud, then to the DME. If this fan fails, the DME can overheat causing a failure.

Nope old fan is dead. My theory is that the temp sensor had gone bad when I left the car with my brother for a week just before the pulley install. He probably drove it with the fan at full speed for the entire week causing damage to the fan motor and didn't even notice.

E90 - How does radiator fan work? This is probably a newbie question but I couldn't find an answer anywhere. We have had 3-Series for years and never really noticed the aux fan coming on, apparently you can even even remove the engine driven fan without problems (Fan Delete Mod).
BMW E90 models utilize a radiator outlet temperature sensor that's located in the right side radiator hose. The sensor monitors coolant temperature as it leaves the radiator. The sensor reading is used by the DME to determine when the electric cooling fan is activated.

The fan should have been on @ 100% during an overheat situation. The fan will usually store a fault in the dme for activation or ihka system faulted for excess pressure (because fan is not coming on). Check power and ground at the fan connector. The fan has a final stage resistor built in so it gets a pwm signal for activation and speed.
